Canada welcomes millions of temporary residents each year.
Everyone needs to meet certain entry requirements in order to come to Canada, which vary depending on where you live, and the reason for your visit.
If you wish to enter Canada temporarily as a visitor or tourist, you must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) at the Canadian Immigration Visa Office responsible for the country or region where you live, unless you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country (see below).
Temporary Resident Visas may be issued for single or multiple entries. A multiple-entry visa allows you to enter Canada several times during the period while your visa is valid. The fee per person is CAD $75 for a single entry visa, CAD $150 for a multiple entry visa or CAD $400 for a family (multiple or single entry).
Visitors or tourists are usually admitted for a period of six (6) months and may apply for an extension while in Canada. It is important to note that possession of a valid Temporary Resident Visa does not necessarily mean that the Canada Border Services Agency officer at the Canadian Port of Entry will admit you into Canada as all visitors must satisfy an Officer that the purpose of their visit to Canada is of a temporary nature.
To receive a visa to visit Canada, you must:
- have a valid travel document, such as a passport
- satisfy an immigration officer that you have ties, such as a job, home and family, that will take you back to your country of origin
- satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit; and
- have enough money for your stay. The amount of money you will need can vary with the circumstances of the visit, how long you will stay and whether you will stay in a hotel or with friends or relatives.
In addition, criminality and medical issues may prevent a visitor from entering Canada.
Citizens of the following Visa-Exempt countries do not require a Canadian Visitor Visa:
Citizens of Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Botswana, Brunei, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel (National Passport holders only), Italy, Japan, Korea (Republic of), Latvia (Republic of), Lithuania, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Solomon Islands, Spain, Swaziland, Sweden, Slovenia, Switzerland, United States, and Western Samoa
